We will be at Metal Liverpool for the duration of the Liverpool Biennale 2018 (May - October) working with Ania Dąbrowska, Katarzyna Perlak, Joanna Rajkowska and Alicja Rogalska on the live events and presentation of new works that were made as a part of The Illusion of Return project. The curatorial residency was put together by Metal Liverpool and international Curators Forum, London.
The residency would be centred around the themes of migration, home and belonging; these were critically engaged with in our recent project, The Illusion of Return. An important objective behind the residency is also to explore how artists and small independent arts organisations can impact on local communities in engaging citizenries in participatory and innovative ways.
The Illusion of Return project ambition is to speak about challenging subjects surrounding national identity, nationalist narratives of exclusion and migration, while promoting integration, diversity and mutual respect; these values of freedom of movement and pluralism have emerged as contested concepts in the post-Brexit political landscape. In this era of growing nationalism, and a rapidly vanishing integration agenda, debating "immigration" and building artistic narratives to foster fruitful dialogue and mutual understanding has become ever more essential.
To design and deliver the intended research, we would also collaborate with the Merseyside Polonia, with whom we plan to link the Liverpool soil community engagement programme we initiated last year alongside the London based group, Poles Connect. The purpose of the programme is to deploy art and stories of migration as tools for developing stronger communities.
As a result of the residency we would implement an exibition and community engagement programme which draws from visual art, performative practices and knowledge exchange workshops developed during Liverpool Biennale 2018, and responding to it's theme Beautiful World, Where Are You? The programme would include critical debates, peer to peer learning, performances and artist presentations. Liverpool-based artists, curators and experts.
